    Genome-wide association study identifies peanut allergy-specific loci and evidence of epigenetic mediation in US children

    Food allergy (FA) affects 2%-10% of US children and is a growing clinical and public health problem. Here we conduct the first genome-wide association study of well-defined FA, including specific subtypes (peanut, milk and egg) in 2,759 US participants (1,315 children and 1,444 parents) from the Chicago Food Allergy Study, and identify peanut allergy (PA)-specific loci in the HLA-DR and -DQ gene region at 6p21.32, tagged by rs7192 (P=5.5 Ă— 10 -8) and rs9275596 (P=6.8 Ă— 10 -10), in 2,197 participants of European ancestry. We replicate these associations in an independent sample of European ancestry. These associations are further supported by meta-analyses across the discovery and replication samples.     Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes as Determined by Glycated Haemoglobin A1c and Glucose Levels in a Developing Southern Chinese Population

    BACKGROUND: The American Diabetes Association and World Health Organization have recently adopted the HbA1c measurement as one method of diagnostic criteria for diabetes. The change in diagnostic criteria has important implications for diabetes treatment and prevention. We therefore investigate diabetes using HbA1c and glucose criteria together, and assess the prevalent trend in a developing southern Chinese population with 85 million residents. METHODS: A stratified multistage random sampling method was applied and a representative sample of 3590 residents 18 years of age or above was obtained in 2010. Each participant received a full medical check-up, including measurement of fasting plasma glucose, 2-hour post-load plasma glucose, and HbA1c. Information on history of diagnosis and treatment of diabetes was collected. The prevalence of diabetes obtained from the present survey was compared with the data from the survey in 2002. RESULTS: The prevalence of diabetes based on both glucose and HbA1c measurements was 21.7% (95% CI: 17.4%-26.1%) in 2010, which suggests that more than 1 in 5 adult residents were suffering from diabetes in this developing population. Only 12.9% (95% CI: 8.3%-17.6%) of diabetic residents were aware of their condition. The prevalence of pre-diabetes was 66.3% (95% CI: 62.7%-69.8%). The prevalence of diabetes and pre-diabetes which met all the three diagnostic thresholds (fast plasma glucose, 2 hour post-load plasma glucose, and HbA1c) was 3.1% and 5.2%, respectively. Diabetes and pre-diabetes as determined by HbA1c measurement had higher vascular risk than those determined by glucose levels. The prevalence of diabetes increased from 2.9% (95% CI: 2.0%-3.7%) in 2002 to 13.8% (95% CI: 10.2%-17.3%) in 2010 based on the same glucose criteria. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that the diabetes epidemic is accelerating in China. The awareness of diabetes is extremely low. The glucose test and HbA1c measurement should be used together to increase detection of diabetes and pre-diabetes

    A coarse-to-fine framework for multiple pedestrian crossing detection

    Abstract When providing route guidance to pedestrians, one of the major safety considerations is to ensure that streets are crossed at places with pedestrian crossings. As a result, map service providers are keen to gather the location information about pedestrian crossings in the road network. Most, if not all, literature in this field focuses on detecting the pedestrian crossing immediately in front of the camera, while leaving the other pedestrian crossings in the same image undetected. This causes an under-utilization of the information in the video images, because not all pedestrian crossings captured by the camera are detected. In this research, we propose a coarse-to-fine framework to detect pedestrian crossings from probe vehicle videos, which can then be combined with the GPS traces of the corresponding vehicles to determine the exact locations of pedestrian crossings. At the coarse stage of our approach, we identify vanishing points and straight lines associated with the stripes of pedestrian crossings, and partition the edges to obtain rough candidate regions of interest (ROIs). At the fine stage, we determine whether these candidate ROIs are indeed pedestrian crossings by exploring their prior constraint information. Field experiments in Beijing and Shanghai cities show that the proposed approach can produce satisfactory results under a wide variety of situations

    The 2nd challenge on remote physiological signal sensing (RePSS)

    Abstract Remote measurement of physiological signals from videos is an emerging topic. The topic draws great interest, but the lack of publicly available benchmark databases and a fair validation platform are hindering its further development. The RePSS Challenge is organized as an annual event for this concern. Here the 2nd RePSS is organized in conjunction with ICCV 2021. The 2nd RePSS contains two competition tracks. Track 1 is to measure inter-beat-intervals (IBI) from facial videos, which requires accurate measurement of each individual pulse peak. Track 2 is about respiration measurement from facial videos, as respiration is another important physiological index related to both health and emotional status. One new dataset is built and shared for Track 2. This paper presents an overview of the challenge, including data, protocol, results, and discussion. We highlighted the top-ranked solutions to provide insight for researchers, and we also outline future directions for this topic and this challenge
